One of the questions we get when talking to our potential customers on the phone is "What's the difference between solid Basswood Shutter and Faux Wood Shutter."
It is a great question and we'd like to take the opportunity to clear up the confusion!
SOLID BASSWOOD
Well, it's solid wood! It can be made to any shape, color, size, etc. The basswood shutter is made right here in the U S A, specifically in North Texas! We can paint or stain the shutters to any color, or match to the color the customer prefers. Wood shutters were once produced from pine, so when poly (plastic) shutters came on to the scene, they used a line something like this...."Poly Shutters will not warp,crack, chip, or peel like wood shutters".
At the time there MAY have been a shred of truth to that selling point, but no more, not with basswood. Basswood does not "leak" sap, nor does it peel, like pine might have back in the day!
Wood shutters are so versatile, it is fine to use them in the bathroom windows. Not IN the shower, but certainly in the windows outside the shower. We coat our shutters with two coats of oil based paint, so no worries!
FAUX WOOD
Faux wood is made from wood by-product. The pieces are mixed together with glue and extruded into the shapes needed for shutters. The components are then wrapped in a poly coating in one of the three colors.
Faux wood shutters are very basic. They come in three colors of white and off white and only in square and rectangular shapes. They are made in China and are imported to the USA. And actually, most all poly and faux wood shutters come from China, whether it is the shutter itself or pieces to assemble once in the US.
IN SUM
The faux wood shutter is a good product for sure - but if we ask the original question a different way, such as "How do the faux wood shutters compare to the wood shutter?" my answer would have to be - There is no comparison to the solid wood Plantation Shutter! It was our only product for approx 29 years, so it stands the test of time, like our wood homes, wood furniture etc, etc...
