Sunbursts/Lazy Arch Sunbursts
Sunbursts, or Shutter Fans, are made to fit into openings that are arched and separated from the windows below by a mullion.
The frame is arched to match the window opening and each louver is hand made to fit along the curve of the frame. The louvers are beveled to lay flat against each other, so that when closed, the look is uniform. Each louver opens and closes independently of the others, so that sunlight can be deflected as needed.
Sunbursts can also be made to sit atop shutter panels for those who like the look, but the windows are not separated by a mullion. In this case the shutter panels and the sunburst are separated by a frame that is placed between the two.
Sunbursts are usually just one panel, but can be made to any length.
I.D. Arches
I.D. arches are for windows with a more severe radius. When the panel configuration is one panel, the arch frame is made to fit the arch and the louvers must be fit and shaped on both sides. In configurations of two panels or more, the louvers only have to be shaped to fit the radius on one end. I.D. arches are made so that the panels can be full length from the window sill to the top of the arch. There is no need for a separate panel such as a Sunburst or Shutter Fan.
I.D. arches are the most popular application for arched windows, but with all the hand work involved…are the most expensive. These arches can be made to any configuration and any arch severity.
O.D. Arches
O.D. arches are used in windows with very slight arches. The top rails are made wider to accomodate the arch, and the outside diameter is cut into the wider top rails. This application is less expensive than the I.D. arch, as no louvers have to be shaped to fit the inside diameter of the arch.
O.D. arches can be any configuration of panels. One, two, four or six, etc…and are usually used in windows that have a arched space of 12'' or less.
Also in this category is the Step-Up arch. Each panel has a different rail width, but the louvers go up into the arch as much as the radius allows. So in a four-panel opening, the two outside panels may have less louvers than the two inside panels, as the extra height of the two inside panels allow for more.
